In the world of healthcare, AI is a topic that sparks both excitement and concern. While many doctors see the potential benefits, there's a growing debate about how AI should be implemented, especially when it comes to patient care.

Despite this, Dr. Bari remains optimistic about the future of AI in healthcare. He welcomes OpenAI's recent announcement of ChatGPT Health, a dedicated chatbot designed to provide health guidance in a private setting, ensuring patient data isn't used for training the AI model.
"It's a step in the right direction," Dr. Bari explains. "By formalizing the process and implementing safeguards, we can empower patients to use these tools more effectively."

The reality is, people are already turning to AI chatbots for health advice. Over 230 million people weekly consult ChatGPT about their health, indicating a shift from traditional search engines to AI-powered conversations.
Andrew Brackin, a health tech investor, sees this as a natural progression. "ChatGPT's healthcare focus makes sense. By creating a private, secure version, they're addressing a growing need for reliable health information."
But AI chatbots have a dark side: hallucinations. OpenAI's GPT-5, according to Vectara's evaluation, is more prone to hallucinations than many Google and Anthropic models, a serious concern in the healthcare context.
For Dr. Nigam Shah, a Stanford professor and chief data scientist, the urgent issue is patient access to care. With primary care wait times often exceeding six months, patients may opt for AI-based solutions over waiting for a real doctor.
"The choice is clear," Dr. Shah argues. "We need to introduce AI into healthcare systems, but we must do it responsibly."
Dr. Shah believes the solution lies in automating administrative tasks, allowing doctors to see more patients and reducing the need for tools like ChatGPT Health.
At Stanford, Dr. Shah's team is developing ChatEHR, a software integrated into the EHR system, streamlining record access for clinicians. Early tester Dr. Sneha Jain praises it, saying, "ChatEHR helps physicians focus on patient care, not record-scouring."
Anthropic, too, is developing AI products for clinicians and insurers, beyond their public Claude chatbot. Their new offering, Claude for Healthcare, aims to reduce time spent on administrative tasks like insurance prior authorization requests.
"Imagine cutting 20-30 minutes from each authorization request," says Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger. "It's a significant time-saver."
As AI and medicine merge, there's an inherent tension. Doctors prioritize patient well-being, while tech companies answer to shareholders. Dr. Bari acknowledges this, saying, "Tension is healthy. Patients rely on us to be cautious and protective."
