PEI Parents and Educators Demand Action: Crisis in Education Unaddressed (2026)

A group of concerned parents, educators, and union leaders are speaking out about the lack of attention given to education during the Progressive Conservative leadership forum in Prince Edward Island. With a passionate and united front, they marched to the Confederation Centre of the Arts, where the final forum was taking place, to demand answers and action.

"The system is failing our students," one parent, Jen Poirier, emphasized. She highlighted critical issues such as inadequate resources reaching the classroom, high student-to-teacher ratios, and a dire shortage of support for teachers. Poirier expressed her disappointment, stating, "We didn't hear concrete plans to improve education for our children. It's a crisis, and we need urgent solutions."

The forum, attended by over 250 people, including the protesters, saw the two leadership candidates, Rob Lantz and Mark Ledwell, field questions on various topics. However, only two questions focused on education, one about post-secondary education and the other about the George Coles Bursary.

Colleen Jackson, president of CUPE 3260, which represents educational assistants, emphasized the need for better support for students. She explained that educational assistants are only paid for six hours a day, which limits their ability to advocate for students' needs effectively. "We know our students best, but we're not at the table for crucial discussions about their education plans. These resources are essential for their well-being and success," Jackson said.

The protesters' message is clear: they want tangible actions and increased funding to address the crisis in education. Poirier and her fellow advocates plan to continue putting pressure on the province, attending public meetings to ensure their voices are heard.

"Our students deserve more. We must ensure they receive the support they need to thrive," Poirier concluded.

And here's where it gets controversial: with limited questions on education and a lack of detailed responses, are the leadership candidates truly prioritizing the future of P.E.I.'s youth? What do you think? Join the discussion and share your thoughts in the comments!
