Toro, which occupies the former Takara Japanese Restaurant, keeps a recognizable atmosphere, yet the difference in execution is clear. Led by Novia Rudiarta and a family team including Komang Suati, Pande (Didi) Suati, Sherwin and Mirah Wiguna, and Yenick (Ochen) Sunariat, Toro embodies a true family-run approach to Japanese fusion cuisine. Their passion shines from the moment you sit down.
We were seated promptly in a quieter dining area while the hibachi room buzzed nearby, and we were greeted by staff who were warm, attentive, and professional.
To start, the sweet potato sushi roll arrived first and disappeared quickly—the crispy tempura texture with a light sauce made it satisfyingly simple. We also enjoyed miso soup and a fresh salad with classic ginger dressing.
The menu spans teriyaki, hibachi, and bento options, and we decided on two vegetarian dishes, a steak entry, and a chicken specialty.
The vegetable tempura impressed with a generous assortment—mushrooms, zucchini, sweet potato, broccoli, onions, and asparagus—lightly battered and perfectly crisp, accompanied by fried rice.
The tofu yaki udon balanced crisp tofu and sautéed onions with thick, chewy udon noodles, seasoned well and comforting in every bite.
For meat lovers, the eight-ounce New York strip steak proved lean, tender, and well-cooked, served with a flavorful teriyaki glaze over sautéed onions, zucchini, carrots, and broccoli, plus fried rice.
The final choice, a bento box, offered a well-rounded sampling: chicken katsu that was tender and crisp, tempura vegetables, a California roll, and fried rice—all prepared with care.
Throughout the meal, the staff’s professionalism and genuine hospitality made us feel like valued guests rather than just another table. Toro Japanese Steakhouse feels familiar in design, but the experience is refreshingly new—and decidedly worth a visit.
